Welcome back to another episode of five minutes in church history.

Last week we looked at an intriguing and colorful 20th century figure, Billy Sunday.

This week will stay in the 20th century, but this comes under the category of and now

for something completely different. We'll go over to the UK and we'll look at a

person who left a rather different mark than Billy Sunday and a person who left a deeply significant legacy.

This is the story of D Martin Lloyd Jones. Now before we begin I need to make two notes of

personal disclosure. The first is that the last two pastors I've had were

significantly shaped and influenced by D Martin Lloyd Jones.

The pastor I had previously when I lived up in Lancaster, Pastor Michael Rogers at Westminster

had two pictures above his desk in his

office at the church. One was of Jonathan Edwards and the other picture was of D. Martin Lloyd

Jones. My current pastor, my co-pastor with Burke

Parsons is R.C. Sprawl. And he heard Lloyd Jones in Westminster Chapel in London has read most if not all of

Lloyd Jones and has been significantly influenced by Lloyd Jones. The second piece of personal disclosure is that for a few years I was teaching

a Masters of Theology course at London Theological Seminary just in a northern suburb of Finchley in London.

And there, one of the classrooms, a seminar room,

had the walls lined with these beautiful bookshelves,

and in those bookshelves was the personal library of Dr. Martin Lloyd

Jones. It was both inspiring and intimidating to teach a course on Jonathan Edwards being surrounded by the personal

library of Lloyd Jones.

So much for my personal disclosure, now on to the story.
