So at this point what goes on is a state has given their opening the defense has given their openings again as we said they weren't earth shattering by any stretch of the imagination so at this point the state is going to start their case in chief and what that means is they're going to put their witnesses and their evidence on and then the defense will cross examine their witnesses and in terms of this this is where they're building their story their narrative this is how they are going to build their case against Laurie Valow and the first witness that they decide to call is

Kay Woodcock and Kay Woodcock in case you forget from the first episode is the sister of the now deceased fourth husband of Laurie Valow Charles Valow and essentially what goes on is that the biological son of Kay who would be Charles great nephew ended up having a kid with his then girlfriend they had a bunch of issues going on financially they weren't able to do it

in terms of raising a kid mentally they weren't there I think they have drug issues and at some point shortly after the birth of the child and what was the baby's name

birth name was canon okay and once the state so the state because there were drugs in the baby system when the baby was born the state put canon who was now JJ in the custody of Kay Woodcock is the baby's grandmother

okay and at some point Charles and Laurie come to Kay and Larry and they say hey you know we've been wanting to have a kid

this seems like this might be a lot for you guys to handle and Laurie and I would love to adopt this baby

and it's okay and Larry talk about it and they kind of examine the situation and this first portion

of the direct examination of Kay kind of gets into her reasoning and her thinking as to why

they were agreeable to allowing Charles and Laurie to adopt the baby here we go

how why did you allow Charles and Laurie to adopt canon they had a much different lifestyle than Larry

and I did all we did was work and and work you go home um they had they were a busy lifestyle they were very family oriented

you know Laurie was active in the community Charles was active they were very active in the church

she just seemed to be the kind of mom that every mom wants to be okay

so at that point Laurie and Charles get JJ they adopt them one of the things that Kay and Larry

want to make very clear to both Charles and Laurie is that look we have to have our relationship with

this this child we want to be very active as grandparents and JJ's life and of course Laurie

and Charles are more than happy to be completely agreeable to that situation and that actually is what

happens for for years for the first years of JJ's life Larry and both Kay would go up and visit

when they were living in they being Laurie and Charles were living in Chandler Arizona they would come

from Lake Charles Louisiana and they'd spend a week two weeks every three months you know so there

was a lot of time being spent Kay would face time JJ when he got old enough and you know they
