Tonight's Astonishing Legend truly fits the title of our show. It plays out exactly like

the opening scene of a 1970s neo-noir film. Imagine a stark, wide shot of the New Mexico desert in early March.

The wind whips across a remote, rugged stretch of Mesa country, about two dozen miles outside

of a small Route 66 town called Santa Rosa. Sitting right in the middle of all that isolated

scrub brush and rock is a gray older Volkswagen

Beetle. It's locked and abandoned. And to get it out there, way off the main highway,

you have to really mean it. It's not the kind of place you just accidentally pull over to stretch your legs.

When the local authorities finally pop the locks on the beetle, they don't find a crime scene.

They find a perfectly preserved time capsule of a man's life.

Sitting right there on the front passenger seat is a 12-string guild acoustic guitar.

Next to it, a wallet with a California driver's license, a pile of clothes,

and a cardboard box loaded with unsold vinyl records.

To the state police, it just looks like a broken-down commuter who decided to hitch a ride,

albeit broken down in a very out-of-the-way place.
