It was just the 20th anniversary of 9-11 and so also, of course, the anniversary of

the war on terror that Bush declared soon thereafter.

A war that was continued by his democratic successor, Obama, a technocrat who tried to remake

the war on terror into something more sensible and sustainable, a candidate upon whom many

had mistakenly projected their anti-war hopes.

And then, the war was commandeered by Donald Trump, who walked onto the stage at the perfect

moment to seize the raw and paranoiac civilizational nationalism that had always powered the war

on terror as it became unhinged from its institutional bearings in noble pretexts.
