Welcome to the Dig, a podcast from Jacobin magazine. My name is Daniel Denver and I'm

0:15.2

broadcasting from Providence, Rhode Island. Yesterday we posted the first in a

0:21.0

four-part collaboration on mass incarceration that we're doing

0:25.6

with Cited, a podcast out of the University of British Columbia.

One of the three interviews in that show was my conversation with Larry Krasner, the left-wing

0:36.6

civil rights lawyer who won the Philadelphia Democratic primary for District Attorney and is all but certain to win the general election.

Knock on wood.

0:48.5

For the purposes of yesterday's show, my interview with Larry was whittled down to less than 20 minutes.

As a bonus episode, we wanted to offer you the real criminal justice nerves and

1:00.0

anti mass incarceration warriors out there the full interview. So here it is. And

1:07.2

before we get started, if you do like the show, if you're a regular listener, please take a moment to help the people who spend half

1:17.0

their waking hours each week working on it. And of course I'm referring to myself and Alex Lewis, my producer. Like you we need to pay for rent, beer and food. So go to patreon.com that's P-A-T-R-E-O-N-D-C-C-C-C-C-C-O-N-G-O-G-T-T-E-O-N-G-O-N-G-T-T-O-N-G-T-T-O-N-G-T-T-O-T-O-G. Our goal is to reach 700, years end. If we can get there, we can cover not only our own finances, but also begin to make

1:48.5

a major investment in improving the audio quality of our guests, and that would be rad.

1:55.0

Okay, here to the dig.

2:13.0

Well, thank you, Dan. It's always good to hear from you.

2:15.8

So when we first met many years back, you were one of Philadelphia's most tenacious

2:21.9

civil rights and defense lawyers, and I was a reporter

2:25.3

at the now sadly defunct Philadelphia City Paper.

2:29.2

It was 2013, if I remember correctly, and I was writing a story about a client of yours,

2:34.8

A Skia Surbore, who had the crap viciously beaten out of him by police on a West Philadelphia

2:42.0

sidewalk on video for no good reason and was then charged with assaulting the cops who beat him up.
