conflicts. But in fact, those conflicts have histories, and rather recent colonial ones at that.

During Britons and France's interwar occupation of Iraq, Palestine, and Syria, the British and French

mandate governments and the League of Nations undertook

campaigns of ethnic removal in separation targeting the Armenian, Assyrian, and Jewish

communities. Such schemes controlled colonial subjects and provided a rationale for neo-imperial international

governance with longstanding consequences for the region.

and massive solidarity rallies that took place across the country,

which brilliantly

overshadowed the president's own inauguration the day after it took place. It was also

a show of force for the feminist movement and sent a clear message that women would be

at the lead in battling the right in the years to come.

But it left unresolved significant divides that pervaded the 2016 primary,

as the many signs paying homage to Hillary Clinton made clear.
