Summary

In this episode, I’m joined by Christopher Gardner and Ty Beal to break down the science and debate behind the latest U.S. Dietary Guidelines. We explore ultra-processed foods, protein recommendations, plant-based alternatives, and how nutrition evidence is interpreted when shaping national dietary advice. Despite disagreements on specific points, this conversation highlights how much common ground exists when scientists engage in open, constructive dialogue. What We Cover Why the Dietary Guidelines process became controversial Conflicts of interest and transparency in nutrition science The science behind ultra-processed foods and the NOVA classification Plant-based meats versus conventional meat Protein intake, muscle health, and ageing Fibre intake and the biggest nutritional gaps in Western diets When you zoom out from the debates, the fundamentals remain clear: diets built around whole foods, fibre-rich plants, and minimally processed ingredients consistently support better health. To connect with the guests and explore more of their work, follow Christopher Gardner on Instagram and LinkedIn, and learn more about his research through the Stanford Nutrition Studies Research Group. You can follow Ty Beal on Instagram, subscribe to his YouTube channel, and explore his research at tybeal.com. The new US dietary guidelines have just been released, and it's safe to say that they've created

0:07.1

an enormous amount of debate. Two separate groups of scientists were charged with providing

0:12.6

research to the government administration to inform these final guidelines. So I thought,

0:18.0

why not invite one scientist from each group onto the show and let's get to the bottom of this.

0:24.3

Today I have Dr. Christopher Gardner from Stanford who sat on the Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee and Dr. Tai Biel from the Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition, who is one of nine authors on the Scientific Foundation Review.

0:38.5

In this episode we get into protein.

0:40.4

Are Americans really not getting enough?

0:43.1

Should there have been greater emphasis on the source of protein in the guidelines?

0:47.7

Saturated fat, do the maths in the guidelines even add up?

0:51.8

Ultra-processed foods, does the evidence justify action, conflicts of interest on both sides,

0:58.0

and whether these guidelines will ultimately help the person trying to feed their family well.

1:03.0

Will Christopher and Ty disagree on everything? Will they find common ground? Let's find out.

1:09.0

This, my friends, is the great dietary guidelines debate.

1:13.2

Please enjoy. Both of you have been involved in, in some capacity, in shaping the current

1:26.0

US dietary guidelines.

1:28.6

No, I haven't, but okay.

1:31.4

Well, to an outsider, I think most people who understand your role in the dietary

1:37.7

guidelines, advisory committee, and your role in the foundation would assume that you've had a lot to say in shaping

1:46.5

the dietary guidelines. And there's obviously been a lot of debate since the guidelines came

1:53.4

out. So I wanted to get both of you in to talk about the new guidelines, the process, the science, the reviews that went

2:02.4

into shaping them. And what's good about the new guidelines, maybe what's not so good, and what

2:10.3

are the most important takeaways for our listeners. Ty, your first time on the show.
