the series The Devil's Luck where I'm sharing cases about people who survived some of the

worst killers in true crime history. In this week's episode a young couple out for a leisurely day at the lake find themselves

faced with one of the most infamous killers of the 20th century. Brian Hartnell and Cecilia Shepard were

victims of a brutal attack by a hooded man who called himself the Zodiac.

They survived the initial attack after being left for dead, but still faced a fierce battle to summon help.

Only one would survive.

Lake Beriesa, Napa County's largest lake, was a popular spot for boaters, fishers, and picnickers, especially on a beautiful

fall day.

But it was now after 6.30 p.m. and most of the lake's visitors had already departed

with only a few stragglers remaining.

Ronald Fong was operating one of the last boats on the lake.

He'd been out for a day of fishing and was just about to return to the boat dock

when he heard someone calling from the shore.
