In February of 1981, in the sleepy town of Brookfield, Connecticut, 19-year-old

Arnie Johnson decided to call in sick to work. His fiance, Debbie Glatzel, was employed as a dog groomer in the small but busy town center.

Arnie, along with his sister Wanda, and his fiance's nine-year-old niece Mary

enjoyed being around the dogs and Arnie always wanted to find ways to spend more time

with his future wife. So a family outing of sorts was planned.

Further, Arnie and Debbie had recently rented an apartment from Debbie's boss Alan Bono.

Along with the dog grooming shop, Mr Bono owned some rental properties in Brookfield. When Mr Bono stopped by his small business,

he was delighted to see Debbie's extended family enjoying themselves with the dogs

and offered to take everyone to a local pizzeria for lunch.

It was during lunch that Mr Bono began drinking heavily.
