Dan Boffy, the Guardian's chief reporter, was outside Westminster Magistrates Court early on Monday morning to secure a seat for a case that has shocked the nation.

Shortly after 9 a.m. the most famous news reader in the country arrived.

Hugh Edwards walked straight past the waiting journalists, ignoring many of his former BBC colleagues and went inside. It was time to learn his fate.

And he was very polite as he was led in and everything but he looked awful. He looked

extremely tired, extra pale. And there was nobody with him apart from his lawyer, his extremely
