When I was in grad school, a friend of mine suggested I read a book by an old cultural

anthropologist I had never heard of before. The book was called The Denial of Death and the author was

Ernest Becker. It was published in 1973 and it was a massive hit at the time. Becker even won the Pulitzer Prize the

following year just a couple months after he died of cancer. The big thesis was that the majority of human behavior is driven by an

unconscious desire to ignore our own mortality, that we do what we do, attach ourselves to the things we attach ourselves to in order to

avoid the reality of our eventual extinction.

Becker would often talk about this an elusive way. distinction. I think that underneath everything that is at stake in human life is the problem of the terror of this planet.
