Today's episode concerned some news that broke a few months ago.

I was in the middle of season four, Satan's shadow, so I decided

to wait until now to cover it. In the true crime world, it's monumental news. I only hope that,

well, I hope it's still news to you. The late summer of 1888 was an extraordinary moment in history, one in which the twisting fogs of London's east end seemed to conceal more than just the looming figures of working-class inhabitants.

As the moon shone down on the gaslit streets, the city appeared to be enshrouded not only by mist,

but by the darker side of human nature. London, that jewel of the Victorian Empire,

had become the setting for a series of murders that would haunt history for generations.

The name Jack the Ripper would come to symbolize not only an unknown killer, but a

society's deepest fears about its own moral decay and unspoken underbelly.

The crimes committed by Jack the Ripper are infamous, not only for their brutality, but for the

enduring mysteries surrounding the identity of the killer. These events would forever alter the

perception of Victorian society, of poverty and class struggles, and of the ability of a society

to protect its most vulnerable. So amid the fog and shadow of London streets, the murders in Whitechapel would become an

embodiment of the era's social fractures, while the hunt for the killer would grip the public

imagination for more than a century.
