Hello and welcome to the 538 Politics podcast. I'm Galen Druke.

We are back to the primary cycle this week with contests in seven states, the most contests of any week this year.

Today, we're going to zoom in on some of the races to watch in California, which has more competitive races than many other states,

maybe more competitive races than any other state, thanks to its independent redistricting commission and top two primary system.

We'll also have a podcast later in the week recapping contests from across all seven states, so don't worry, our coastal bias will be evened out.

This week also marks the beginning of the January 6th Committee public hearings.

They'll begin this Thursday, June 9th at 8pm, so today we're going to preview what we can expect from those hearings and take a look back

at which past congressional hearings have been able to garner enough public attention to change minds and history.

And because we could all use some later news these days, we've got a good or bad use of polling on superhero movies.

Do they have partisan followings? Is Batman too rich to be anything but a Republican?

What is Superman's immigration policy given his extraterrestrial origins?

How would Thanos' Malthusian ideology reshape American politics?

We will answer at least one of those questions.
