Hello and welcome to the 538 Politics podcast. I'm Gaelin Druke. I hope everyone had a nice

memorial day weekend. When we recorded our late night primary podcast last week, I mentioned that we

would follow up with a conversation about public opinion on gun laws and that is what we're going to

do today. As with every mass shooting, there are specifics to the Evalde school shooting,

the shooting at a Buffalo grocery store and an orange county church that are unique and there are

other aspects that we've seen before. But what is clear from these tragedies is that they've once

again sparked a conversation about gun laws in America. And it remains something of a conundrum that

Americans seem to overwhelmingly support stricter gun laws in some cases, yet none are passed.

So let's talk about why. Then we're going to debate whether the narrative that the democratic

party is in disarray is accurate. While in power, the party has struggled to pass its legislative

agenda and now faces a difficult midterm environment and uncertainty about who will lead the party

at the next presidential election. Lots of trend pieces have been happy to point out those

difficulties. So is the party dysfunctional or is this all power for the course? Here with me to
