Even the name sounds old and irrelevant. Electronic Gaming Monthly. It was a magazine for nerds. Sure they tried to bury the name a while back shortening it to

EGM on the cover. At the turn of the century they even even played at coolness, interviewing actresses and rock bands about their video gaming habits.

Eventually, the readers, the nerds, got tired of hearing about all the skinny blonde girls who loved to play Miss Pac-Man,

and E.G. M. got back to the business of serving folks who'd rather spend a Saturday in the

glow of a TV than out in the sun. All was well, until it wasn't.

When the magazine closed earlier this month, you could be forgiven for not caring.

Maybe you had better things to do with your time than to read about video games.

Maybe you grew up in the internet age and the entire concept of reading words that don't

glow in the dark is foreign and scary to you.

Maybe you were too busy worrying about your own job if you still have one.

For game nerds of a certain era though, growing up when it wasn't okay to be a nerd,

when almost everything, including including information existed as a tangible

touchable thing EGM was a holy text. Yeah I mean I grew up with with reading EGM of

course and I was so like I was just a hardcore game nerd at the time and at the time you know when you're like 15 and it's like 1991

1992 you don't have anywhere to turn there was no internet at that time there was nowhere to go

so eGM was like this thing that came every month and it was full of Japanese

screenshots and crazy games that no one else cared about.

I would read a cover to cover.
