Summary
The first time she saw him, he was smiling in a doorway just days after his funeral. He didn’t speak. He didn’t approach. He simply turned and left.
Years later, after surviving an attack that split her life in two, the watching returned — no longer gentle, no longer ambiguous. This time, the presence carried a shape she recognized. Not solid. Not transparent. Familiar enough to tighten her chest before her mind could explain it away.
Throughout childhood, she had learned to live with shadows in the margins — footsteps overhead, movement in mirrors, the feeling of being observed. But after violence entered her life, the phenomenon sharpened. It adapted.
What unsettles her most isn’t whether what she saw was trauma given form. It’s how deliberate the timing felt.
