Summary
In part one a junior partner in a Chicago law firm travels by train, and then by foot, to an Illinois farm at which his firm's client, a young widow named Mrs. Delaney, is staying with relatives. His mission: to show her what she is legally entitled to with the sale of her husband's property. She has been told otherwise by her crooked relatives, who find a way, using a vicious bulldog, to trap first the young lawyer, and then Mrs. Delaney, on the roof of the carriage house.
