Today we're taking you back to the creation of the state of Israel.

In 2010 Lucy Williamson spoke to two people who were there.

It's May the 14th, 1948. 4 o'clock on a Friday afternoon, just before the Jewish

Sabbath, and in his house in Tel Aviv, Aria Handler is preparing to leave for a very special meeting at the City Museum.

I said to my wife, Penny, this is the only way for us to get the state.

And what did she say?

She was not convinced.

But Arii was convinced.

200 Jewish political leaders were gathering at the

museum to call into being the state of Israel. After months of conflict over the

creation of a Jewish state, this meeting would draw a line in the sand.

And I remember it was outside raining.

We knew it was Friday afternoon and we were called in for the meeting.

So when you arrived, you walked in and there were 200 people. What was the atmosphere like?

A wonderful atmosphere.
