The clock had stopped working three years before his grandmother died.

That was what everyone in the family agreed on later, because somehow

it mattered more than it should have. It had not been ticking during her last Christmas. It had not

kept proper time for years. No matter how often someone tried winding it, the hands eventually

froze again. Still, when he thought about his grandmother's house, he always

heard that clock. It sat on a narrow shelf above the kitchen table between a ceramic rooster

and a glass jar filled with rubber bands. The wooden case had darkened with age,

worn smooth at the corners from decades of dusting and handling, and the numbers on the face had faded

slightly yellow over time. Beneath the hand set a tiny brass keyhole where his grandmother inserted

the winding key every morning after breakfast. The clock itself was small, but the ticking was

impossibly loud. It had an uneven rhythm that never sounded completely healthy, as if the mechanism inside

caught briefly before forcing itself forward again.

Tick, tick, tick.
