It's the middle of the afternoon in July 2003 in Clear Lake, Texas, and it's a very normal summer's afternoon.

There's cars parked outside, the streets are sometimes full of kids, sometimes neighbours just kind of looking out of their window.

Nothing much is going on. But inside this

one house, something awful has happened. A friend has called to check in on her friends and there was

no answer and so she goes round to the house. She sees the door is unlocked and walks inside.

And inside that house she finds a massacre

there are four bodies the bodies of her friends inside that house and she has no idea what's

happened she doesn't even know if the person who is responsible is still here so she runs out

and calls the police and that is where our case is

starting today. And the killer was someone that no one expected so much so that three years

would pass before an arrest was made. This is red rum. Stories about the true victims of crime.

Clear Lake, Texas isn't a place most people associate with violence. It's a suburban stretch

southeast of Houston and it's this community built around families and careers and pretty much a quiet way of life.

It's very near the NASA Johnson Space Center.

And that connection, it isn't just geographic.

It really seems it's cultural.

There's engineers, scientists, technicians, and their families, they've all settled in Clear Lake because of good jobs, stability. That sense of purpose

really filters into the neighbourhoods. And when you look around, you see like tidy lawns, similar looking

houses, this kind of rhythm of just everyday life being quite nice. You know, kids with bikes

in streets, neighbours saying hello, front doors not always being locked. And that certainly
