What do we mean by “Church” or “church”? When we use this term (or these terms, when writing permits distinguishing them with the capital letter), we really mean a handful of distinct things — it is important to keep these clear. In today’s episode, we go over the Church (universal), the church (institutional), and the church (local, congregational). For the Christian, there is great comfort in recognizing the reality of the Church, even when the churches may be in disarray.

“In short, according to Lutheran teaching, it is faith in the Gospel which in every case establishes membership in the Christian Church. To him who believes the Gospel, membership in the Christian Church may not be denied; of him who rejects the Gospel, membership in the Christian Church may not be asserted. Excommunication pronounced against true believers does not deprive them of membership in the Church.”
Francis Pieper, Christian Dogmatics

The Welcome to the Stone Choir podcast. I am Corey J. Mahler. And I'm still, Whoa.

0:43.3

On today's Stone Quire, we're going to be discussing the subject of the church,

0:49.3

and we'll talk about the definition, the form, and the scope of the church and what we mean when we use

0:54.7

that in different contexts. Before we get into the subject, just a brief bit of housekeeping,

1:00.7

this is the end of the calendar year, almost the end of 2023 as we're recording this. So

1:06.5

Christmas is in a couple weeks. The church calendar just began a couple weeks ago with the

1:11.1

Advent of Advent, because that's what that word means. So we decided that next week we're going to be

1:16.2

doing the church calendar. And this week we thought that before getting into the details of the

1:21.5

blessing of the calendar that the church has given us throughout history, we should probably define

1:26.2

what church means first.

1:31.6

So we are going to do that now, and then next week we'll have the calendar.

1:37.6

These will probably both be shorter episodes, kind of give you guys a little bit of a break as we get into the Christmas season.

1:43.6

And we're going to be taking two weeks off because the following week is going to be Kwanza,

1:45.6

where we normally record, and I don't know, wrong Kwanza. We didn't want to, we didn't want to record during Christmas week and because when

1:52.7

we record we pretty much immediately began worrying about the following recording. We're going to take

1:57.6

the next week off just so I can actually, we can both have a break kind of the week of Christmas

2:01.9

So after next week the following recording that we release will be on the 10th of January

2:08.3

So just give you heads up there will be a two-week break you can go back and listen to previous episodes if you feel like there's good stuff back there

2:16.4

Today as we're discussing church I want to give you just a very brief example in three

2:21.9

sentences that probably apply to virtually everyone listening.

2:26.8

You were baptized into the church.
