Summary

In this episode Caroline and Liz have the unprecedented intervention of Cheshire Police Chief Constable Mark Roberts in the ongoing debate about Lucy Letby. In a letter he has accused the MP David Davis of misleading parliament and spreading misinformation about the force's investigation into Lucy Letby. It comes after Mr Davis spoke in the House of Commons two weeks ago claiming Cheshire Police and the Crown Prosecution Service had not followed proper procedures in their investigation. But the MP has now been told to correct the record and accused of failing to fact check.

Welcome to the Trial UK. I'm Caroline Cheatham.

0:09.0

And I'm Liz Hall. We'll be back to the podcast.

0:34.8

Liz, you and I are recording this on Sunday afternoon. And we should just say, Liz, it's you and I today because Nick Fage, who of course has been covering the Chris Tribus trial with me, he's still at Winchester Crown Court. Now, what's happening at the moment is the jury are about to be sent out to start their deliberations. They're still

0:56.3

being addressed by the judge in the main, that sort of legal directions and how they should go

1:02.7

about their deliberations. But once he's finished, which is expected to happen in the next,

1:08.2

well certainly by close of play today, which is Tuesday, we're expecting

1:12.3

the jury to be out. Then they'll start considering their verdicts. And whenever they come back

1:18.4

with a decision in the next few days or weeks, we will be back on the podcast, Nick and I,

1:23.7

to bring you that episode. But today, Liz and I, we're going to talk about something different.

1:29.6

And Liz, it is about Lucy Lettby again. You've written a piece for the paper about this story

1:35.2

that we got wind of a couple of days ago. And effectively, I suppose, we'll explain it in a minute,

1:41.3

but it's an almighty row, isn't it, between David Davis MP,

1:46.2

a man who is leading really the charge to see Lucy Lett be freed from prison,

1:52.5

says she is innocent of the charges of which she's been convicted, and in an unprecedented

1:57.8

way, really, the chief constable of Cheshire Police, Mark Roberts.

2:03.7

So let's go back to March the 26th and talk us through where this all started,

2:09.8

and then we'll work out how we got where we are.

2:11.9

So you might remember a couple of weeks ago, Sir David Davis had a German debate just before Easter,

2:19.1

and he stood up and kind of made some more points, really, about Cheshire Police and how they

2:26.8

got the investigation into Lucy Lettby wrong, essentially. He effectively was saying that

2:32.9

Cheshire Police's investigation into Lucy

2:34.8

Lettby was biased and flawed, that they'd focus too much on Lucy Lettby as their prime
