This is a preview of the latest Trial+ episode; The Nottingham Inquiry - “I am not going to stop till we get justice”. The full episode is available exclusively to Crime Desk subscribers. To find out more, visit https://plus.thecrimedesk.com/

In June 2023, a series of unthinkable attacks in Nottingham killed three people and left three others seriously injured.

Students Grace O’Malley-Kumar and Barnaby Webber were fatally stabbed as they walked home from a night out. The attacker then went on to kill school caretaker Ian Coates and steal his van, which was later used to drive into pedestrians in the city centre.

The man responsible, Valdo Calocane, had previously been diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia. He was later given an indefinite hospital order after admitting manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility.

Before the public inquiry into the Nottingham Attacks is due to restart, Caroline and Ryan are joined by Grace’s father, Sanjoy Kumar. With his experience as a GP and a forensic medical examiner, he describes a series of missed opportunities across multiple agencies, including police and mental health services, arguing that warning signs were repeatedly overlooked.

He says that the Nottingham Attacks were totally avoidable- and is determined to get justice for his daughter.

Hi, it's Caroline here. Now over on trial plus, over the weekend. We released another episode

0:17.9

looking at the Nottingham inquiry. That's of course the public inquiry

0:21.4

looking into the horrific series of attacks that killed three people and injured three others.

0:27.7

In our most recent episode, Ryan Hooper and I spoke to Sanjoy Kumar. Now he's the father of Grace

0:34.2

O'Malley Kumar. She, of course, was 19 when she was tragically killed in those attacks.

0:40.7

She walked home from a night out with her friend Barnaby Weber. He was also killed.

0:47.0

Now, the man responsible was called Valdo Calicane. Calicane had been diagnosed with paranoid

0:53.3

schizophrenia before the attacks and he was

0:55.8

later sentenced to a hospital order after he admitted manslaughter on the grounds of diminished

1:01.2

responsibility. Now, the interview with Sanjoy was incredibly powerful and we wanted to share

1:07.4

some of what he had to say with all of you. We should say he is a doctor himself,

1:13.3

a GP. His wife is a consultant anisotist. So they're approaching the inquiry, both as parents.

1:20.7

He is a father wanting justice for his daughter, but also as a professional. He knows something

1:27.1

about how investigations, like the one in

1:30.7

Tervaldo Calicane, should operate. Ultimately, he wants there to be accountability for the

1:37.4

mountain of failings that allowed the Nottingham attacks to happen and he told us he will not

1:42.4

stop pushing for action until he sees justice for his

1:46.5

daughter and for the other victims. Ultimately he says people should just do their jobs

1:53.2

properly or they should lose those jobs. But for now, here's just some of what he had to say.

2:06.2

Sanjoy, thank you so much for coming onto the podcast. I did call you Dr. Kumar, but you want to be

2:10.8

called Sanjoy. We're not doing formalities today. Is that right? I do, Caroline. Thank you. And thank you
