Summary

John Ellis and Laura Preston left their lives in New York City on February 1st, 2013 to spend a year traveling around the United States in a 34 foot Airstream trailer. But instead of choosing their own destinations, they crowd-sourced the itinerary, letting the internet decide where they go. John, a freelance web developer, designed and built a website where people can suggest any place in the country for the couple to visit. The suggestions can then be voted upon; John and Laura visit the places with the most votes. They share photos and stories about their experiences on their blog and various social medias. Both John and Laura come from artistic backgrounds. John went to school in Atlanta to study photography and worked for legendary photographer Jay Maisel for a number of years in Manhattan. Laura is a painter and studied art history and studio art at New York University. www.thedemocratictravelers.com www.zacharyconcepcion.com/ www.thecandidframe.com info@thecandidframe.com

Now, the show is called The Candid Frame a Photography podcast, and yeah, we spend a lot of time talking to photographers, but this show isn't exclusively about photography.

For me, the show is really about making choices, about making the most out of life.

1:12.6

In life, there are people that allow life to sort of come to them and things sort of just happen. And there are a lot of people who make the choice to do

1:18.6

something, to make something happen. And I think that the great majority of the people that

1:22.3

I've interviewed on the show are the latter. They're the people who make a choice to do something and more often

1:30.0

than not, it doesn't always turn out as planned, but that's part of the great thing about it.

1:36.4

There's some unexpected and some wonderful things that can happen just as a result of just

1:41.3

making the choice to not only follow your passion, but just to do something

1:46.1

different and just to see what the result is. And today's guest, John Ellis and Laura Preston,

1:51.9

are an example of that. They are the Democratic travelers. John Ellis is a photographer

1:58.1

who was working for a Jamiesel for a number of years, and he and Laura took on

2:04.2

this journey to travel around the country in a truck pulling an airstream. And it's an adventure

2:12.1

that a countless number of people have always imagined themselves doing, but this couple is actually

2:18.8

doing it.
