Summary

Travel photographer Tom Carter (1973) was born and raised in the City of San Francisco and graduated with a degree in Political Science from the American University in Washington, D.C. Following a political career with a number of high-profile state and national campaigns, Tom decided to "peek over the fence" and subsequently spent 18 months backpacking down the length of Mexico, Cuba and Central America. Tom later spent one year in Japan, one year in India, and four years in the People's Republic of China, traveling extensively throughout the country's 33 provinces and autonomous regions. The result was his first book, CHINA: Portrait of a People, hailed as the most comprehensive book of photography on modern China ever published by a single author. https://www.facebook.com/chinaportrait?fref=ts http://www.magnumphotos.com/C.aspx?VP3=CMS3&VF=MAGO31_10_VForm&ERID=24KL53ZGM6 www.thecandidframe.com info@thecandidframe.com

you need to do?

You go to school, you get degrees, you take tests, you get certified, and at some point

0:39.2

you can get a business card that says, I'm a doctor, I'm a lawyer, I'm a dentist. But what if you

0:46.2

want to become a photographer? And it's a question that's asked of a lot of professional

0:50.8

photographers. How do I achieve what you've achieved? How can I lay claim to the very same life experience, to the title, to the reputation of being

0:59.5

a professional photographer?

1:01.9

And if you've been listening to this show for any period of time, you realize that there's

1:05.1

no one clear path to achieving that.

1:09.0

And today's guest, Tom Carter, is a good example of that because in his book, China Portrait

1:14.4

of a People, he's created a really amazing body of work, a comprehensive exploration of the

1:20.0

people of China.

1:21.8

But when he started this project, he was just a traveler, a backpacker, who had been teaching English to people in China and then said,

1:31.9

you know something?

1:32.5

I want to go out there and I want to explore this world that I'm inhabiting right now.

1:37.0

And even though I don't have any experiences of photography or even though I don't have a degree,

1:41.4

and all I really have is a small point-and-shoot camera,

1:44.6

he went out and did something that a lot of people dream of doing.

1:49.6

And the result is his book, China, Portrait of a People.
