Summary

Since the dawn of the chemical era more than 300,000 chemicals have been invented, and many are made from oil and natural gas. While some manufactured chemicals have indeed provided benefit (Disinfectants! Antibiotics!), they have also caused great harm. Manufactured chemicals pollute every corner of the planet. They kill bees, fish, and mammals. They nearly destroyed the ozone and, yes, they give us cancer. Many types of cancer are on the rise in the US, and one explanation for this increase lies in our world of chemicals. On today's show environmental investigative reporter Kristina Marusic identifies the harmful environmental exposures linked to cancer; she also provides a step-by-step roadmap for reducing your cancer risk. Here's a preview:  [2:00] Breaking down exactly what's happening with cancer rates around the world and why [12:00] The 3 Ps: 3 categories of pollutants that have clear links to childhood cancer [20:00] Pay special attention to these preventable environmental exposures if you have children [24:00] Revisiting the personal care product conundrum  [28:00] The harmful environmental exposures you should zero in on at your child's daycare or school  [36:00] In defense of being a loudmouth: You've been given a voice; here's how to best use it   Resources mentioned:  A New War on Cancer: The Unlikely Heroes Revolutionizing Prevention Sample letters to send to your child's school and school board (via Non-Toxic Communities)  The Cancer Free Economy Network  The EWG's Healthy Living App  Silent Spring Institute The Center for Health, Environment, and Justice   This show is listener-supported. Thank you for supporting! re-air. If you're a little late to the party to celebrate this show's 500th episode, which

0:14.2

aired last week, I am re-airing my top five favorite episodes from the last 500. So today we're doing number three.

0:24.9

And this episode is in the number three position for, I'll give you three reasons. Reason number one,

0:31.1

my guest comes packed today with science. All of her tips and tricks and trends that she cites, it's all science-based,

0:42.2

as in empirical research informs her responses. Science is important. Reason number two,

0:49.3

my guest, Christina, she's not all doom and gloom. She gives actionable tips to implement in our own lives with

0:56.2

regard to reducing cancer's preventable exposures. And reason number three, when it comes to

1:03.2

deleterious health effects and links to products, it's a very fine line to walk, right? X causes

1:09.7

cancer. You can't say that without welcoming a lawsuit. But Christina does it today. She manages to do it and she does it so darn well. Enjoy this re-air of my number three most favorite episode of all time about reducing our cancer risk amidst rapidly rising cancer rates. Enjoy. Well, hello there,

1:37.9

listeners. Welcome back. My name is Stephanie Safarian, and you're listening to Episode 396 of

1:43.4

Sustainable Minimalists, a show about

1:45.7

intentional and eco-friendly minimalist living. On today's show, we are discussing rising

cancer rates, particularly rising cancer rates amongst children and what we can do about it.

2:04.2

Now, if you are a long-time listener to the show, you have likely noticed a pattern over the years in which Tuesday's episode is an interview and

2:11.0

Thursday's episode is a solo episode. Not true today. I am changing things up and I am bringing you an interview on a

2:20.0

Thursday. I know, keeping you on your toes. The reason I'm bringing you this interview on a Thursday

2:26.0

is because the information that my guest brings today is just so powerful and so important

2:32.0

that I really couldn't wait for a Tuesday to release it.

2:36.2

I feel as though this information needs to get out into the world right this second,

2:40.8

and so here we are.
