Summary

Music Matters host Darrell Craig Harris interviews The Builders and The Butchers frontman/lead vocalist Ryan Sollee from his home in Portland Oregon to talk about the bands new releases, upcoming shows, and more in this new interview! About the band  The Builders and the Butchers were formed in the fall of 2005 in Portland, Oregon. The band's first two years consisted of busking, playing house shows, and showing up unannounced anywhere around Portland where people were gathered. Folks began to take notice and the band transitioned slowly, going from playing on the floor of venues unplugged to gradually adding a mic here, an amp there, until they organically grew into one of the most exciting live acts in the Pacific Northwest. Even when plugged in, a cornerstone of almost every builders show is playing on the floor at some point during the set. Touring relentlessly from 2007-2012 The Builders gathered a cult dedicated fan base across the US and Europe. Playing dozens of music festivals like Sasquatch and Lollapalooza, as well as supporting artists like Portugal. The Man, Amanda Palmer, Murder By Death, and Heartless Bastards. You've been around for quite a while, I think, since 2005, right? That's right. That's right. Yeah. So for most bads, that's a lifetime.

0:38.5

It's pretty rare to be able to keep it together for that long.

0:41.8

You guys have your seventh album coming out on April 3rd called No Tomorrow.

0:47.4

So how are you guys been?

0:49.1

It sounds like you've been very busy.

0:50.4

I know you do a lot of shows too as well.

0:53.3

Yeah, you know, we're not as busy. You know,

0:55.9

the height of the touring aspect of the band was kind of like 2008 to maybe 2012. We toured a ton.

1:03.6

And then we had kids and got married and had to get different kinds of jobs where we couldn't

1:09.8

just like, you know, have a, you know, a pizza delivery job and quit it to go on tour. We had to get different kinds of jobs where we couldn't just like, you know, have a, you know,

1:12.2

a pizza delivery job and quit it to go on tour. We kind of had to kind of had to do. So we've,

1:16.7

we've kind of really played a lot less, but consistently every year, you know, we play, we try to

1:24.0

play 20 or 30 shows, different places and mix it up and try to be strategic. But, you know, that's trying to like thread that needle of not ruining your life, but also being able to play. Yeah, I'm a musician, too, so I totally get all that. What you want to do when you're in your 20s, it's harder to do it. You guys have managed to keep it alive.

1:44.6

The new album sounds killer.

1:46.3

I was checking it out the last couple of days.

1:49.4

And all your music is great.

1:51.1

What kind of style you would say you're in?

1:54.2

To me, it seems like Americana, but with an edge,

1:56.6

is an intensity to what you guys do.

1:59.0

Yeah, somebody said recently it was apocalyptic Americana, and I like that. Yeah, there's an intensity. And are you the lead singer or is there a different? I am. Okay, yeah, because your voice is really cool. It's very interesting. I hear like a little bit of Jack White, smashing pumpkins in there, a couple of different things. I don't like the label people, but I really love your voice.
