Summary

Our appearance affects the way others see us, whether we like it or not (hello, Hillary Clinton). Most successful women spend a lot of time thinking about the image they present to the outside world. But how you 'should' look in a professional setting can depend on where you work. And while there's endless emphasis on women's appearance, men have to think about this too. The power of image runs deep.

Hi, it's Ashley here. This week I have a re-release show for you, but it's one, I think, the vast

0:06.2

majority of you haven't heard. It came out in 2013 when I've probably been doing the show for about

0:12.5

a year. And it's all about image at work. And you'll hear that Hillary Clinton makes up a decent

0:20.6

part of what we talk about on the show,

0:22.8

which seems even more appropriate now that she's running for president.

for the others, maybe you'll give it another spin. And there are so many shows in the

0:49.6

archives that I would love it if more people could hear. So don't forget to check out some of

0:53.9

the old shows that you haven't heard.

Here's the show.

This week, a show about image.

1:08.7

I'm quite surprised I'm doing this.

1:12.7

It seems a bit retro and a bit women's magazine-y to talk about how appearance affects women's careers. I've basically avoided

1:18.3

women's magazines for 15 years because I think they conspire to make women feel inadequate.

1:23.9

But what got me thinking about this was reading a column by Financial Times fashion editor Vanessa

1:29.0

Friedman a while ago. In it, she talked about how Cheryl Sandberg of Facebook studiously avoids

1:34.7

discussing her clothes in any article she's featured in, even in Vogue. Friedman says it's as

1:40.1

if Sandberg thinks she'll come across as superficial if she discusses her appearance
