First filled the sky over Quincy Illinois on the cold evening of November 8th, 1878.

A 16 year old boy named Charles Ashmore walked out of his family's home and gazed up at

the array of light over his head.

Perhaps he contemplated the mystery of what was up there in that black sky or who else

around the world might be looking at the same view at that same moment.

But we'll never know because Charles soon became a mystery himself.

An early snow had fallen on Illinois and Charles went down the two back porch steps and

man crossing the carpet of white spread across the yard.

He had a bucket in his hand because he'd been sent to fetch water from the spring that

was a short distance away.
