In 1971, a boy was born in Texas who had a very rare genetic disorder which made him hugely susceptible to infections.

He had to live sealed off from the outside world in a completely sterile environment.

He became known as the boy in the bubble, and his life became the focus of much attention in the

American media. When he finally succumbed to an infection in February 1984 it made

headlines across the US and beyond.

My son David was born with a genetic defect called
