Hi, I'm Sue Mitchell and this is the Boatsmugglers for BBC World Service.

So we've just driven on to the camp at Dunkirk.

Every time we come out, she looks so different, doesn't it?

But this is what happens is that they allow them to set up in one place, disperse them all,

and then all they do is move half a mile down the road where we're going now and set up again.

I first teamed up with former British soldier and aid worker Rob Laurie in 2017.

He'd gone to volunteer in the Calais jungle when it sprang into existence.

A huge camp, housing thousands of migrants hoping to cross from France into Britain.

Most were planning to make the journey by Laurie or Carr.

At that point hardly any talked about crossing by boat.

Today things are very different and last year just over 45,000 made that perilous sea crossing.

At the start of this trade, the inflatables they used came in all shapes and sizes.

Many were second-hand. If you go to Dover now and look at the vessels recovered by UK Border Force,

you can see just how different the boats are. They're bigger for a start.

The whole supply chain is far more sophisticated and the profits being made are astronomical.

We want to investigate this much overlooked side of the channel crossings,

where are the boats being made? Who oversees things?

How much is it worth?

30, 40, 50 people are we put in rubber boats, hundreds of people.
