Summary

Since 2020, when the so-called Nth Room scandal revealed how women and children were lured and blackmailed to make explicit videos for distribution through chatrooms, the lucrative online sexual exploitation of women and children has intensified. Sojeong Lee investigates why women in South Korea are so especially vulnerable to online abuse and exploitation and why so little has been achieved by government and police. How have the country’s economic and social characteristics led to this hotbed of digital sex crime?

0:30.3	their phones. I'm Soojung Lee, a journalist in South Korea. Human rights watch
0:36.3	recently named my country as the digital sex crime capital of the world. For
0:42.5	the BBC World Service, I want to find out how we got there. All over the station
0:51.0	there are so many posters warning that it's illegal to film in the subway.
0:55.5	Elicit filming has been a huge social issue in South Korea. This was
1:01.4	highlighted by the end-door case a digital sex crime scandal which shocked
1:06.6	the nation with its first revelations in 2019. Several perpetrators were
1:13.0	arrested and charged with operating a chat room on Telegram which is a
1:17.1	messaging app. They were sharing exploitative videos and images of women and
1:22.1	children. Victims were blackmailed into performing sexually explicit acts on
1:27.5	camera. Their crimes included extortion and distribution of child pornography
1:34.1	and even rape. Cyber sex crime has always been there. Don't ignore it just
1:42.2	because it's below the surface. One in T is an anti sex crime activist and
1:48.2	journalists set the online publication called Aluxo. In 2019 she was a student
1:55.7	looking for a lead to write an article about elicit filming for an
1:59.9	investigative journalism contest. Then one in T found a Google blog which was
