My name's Brandon Galey and welcome to episode 211 of the blog millionaire.

Before I wrote my first blog post back in April of 2013, I had to make a decision between two choices.

I could spend the majority of my time writing on topics I loved and probably not get much traffic,

or I could invest that same time on more obscure topics that were not

in my wheelhouse and get a whole lot of traffic. Writing about blogging and SEO tactics would

have been effortless for me. The problem with this is that I knew the competition was way too high

and the number of total topics

was way too low. For me to have a chance of competing for any of these keywords, I would

have to run a non-stop outreach campaign to build backlinks to each individual post. After doing

all of that, it would still take me a year or two in order to crack

the top 10. And once I got to the top 10, the pain and stress would not end there. Every month,

a major website like H-Refs, Ma's, Backlinko, or SEM Rush would continue to create more high-quality content to compete with whatever

I was ranking for. And all of these sites are between an 80 and 90 domain authority.

As much as I wanted to write about my favorite topics, I realized that my blog was a business,

not a hobby. If I treated it like a hobby,

then I was never going to make a significant amount of money from it. Initially, I made the decision

to write 80% of my posts on the more obscure topics and 20% on SEO and blogging topics. After two years of doing this, I saw the obscure topics were producing 99% of my traffic.

At that point, I scaled back even further on writing blog posts on the more popular SEO

and blogging topics.
