Summary

The Blair Witch Project was revered and reviled in equal measures upon its release in the summer of 1999. Regardless of which camp you fell into, one thing remains clear - this is one of the most influential horror movies of all-time. Not only did it single-handedly bring the found footage format into the mainstream, it was also one of the first films to utilize the internet for its complex and groundbreaking marketing campaign.

Chris knew a little too much about how it was made to get fully on board with it, but was (and still is) really impressed with the logistics of this production. Kristen and Carlos, on the other hand, bought in completely and were deeply affected by what they essentially thought was a snuff film.

Topics include: how the filmmakers were able to convince such a large portion of the audience that this was real footage and the lengths they went to in order to sell that idea, the supplemental promotional items that delved further into the Blair Witch mythos, the purpose of the two cameras and how they're being used here, the pros and cons of letting the actors actually work the equipment, some various explanations for what's actually taking place in these woods, the frustrating but effective final moments, and much much more!

Hello and welcome to Hey Do You Remember, a show where we reminisce about a movie or TV series we grew up with, then take off the rose-tinted glasses to see how it holds up.

Thank you. And I'm Kristen. And today we're revisiting the Blair Witch Project. Well, so before we get into this, I should probably mention that Donna was not able to join us today because she's got a lot going on at the moment. In the meantime, Kristen's here to fill in, so thank you for doing so.

No problem.

1:05.4

And this is fitting in a way because you, the first time you were on the show was for last year's bonus Halloween episode.

1:11.4

That's right.

1:12.8

And there were a few requests, actually, to make you sit through like another horror movie

franchise.

1:17.4

There were some suggestions.

1:18.9

But I think I mentioned to you that the problem with doing that is that like most of the

1:23.1

popular horror franchises, there's like 10, 11, 12 installments.

1:28.8

It was four child, five childs.

1:31.0

Six childs play movies.

1:32.4

By the end of that week, I was at work telling me I was like, I don't want to watch anymore.

1:35.9

I never want to see that fucking doll again.

1:38.8

I'm so tired of me.

1:40.1

I know. So I couldn't, like, the idea of doing, like, Nightmare and Elm Street or, you know, Friday the 13th or Halloween, which I would have loved to have done the Halloween series, but it's like, that's abuse. I'm not going to put you to that. So I'm sparing you that. Instead, we've got this nice 80-minute long movie that feels like it's four hours long. And as far as our memories of Blair Witchgo, Carlos, I want to start with you because this is one you've brought up repeatedly over the course of our friendship at various points.

2:06.4

And so I've gathered that it made quite an impact on you.
