Summary

In December 1970, Pakistan held its first democratic elections since the end of British colonial rule in 1947. The results would lead to war, the break-up of Pakistan and the creation of Bangladesh. Farhana Haider spoke to Rehman Sobhan, an economist and leading figure in the Bengali independence movement.

All this week we're looking back at the Bengali War of Independence, which ended 50 years ago, and claimed hundreds of thousands of lives.

The catalyst for the conflict was the elections in Pakistan in December 1970.

Muslims. Millions migrated there. It was divided into two wings, East and West Pakistan,
