Just past noon on September 29, 1990,

22-year-old Linda Yainan exited her dorm room in the Richmond Quad

on the university at Buffalo campus. Linda set her run that day to

what tears for fears cassette. She stepped into the warm autumn sun

and headed north along the Ellicott Creek bike path.

The narrow path was framed by the familiar dense hardwood forest to Linda's

right and the gently flowing creek on her left.

She was almost at the footbridge, so close to the overpass

that she could see the traffic on Interstate 990.

Linda pushed herself hard. Her mind was on the New York City

marathon just a few weeks away. Her white new balance sneakers slapped the

asphalt with each step as her walkman pushed her on with the rhythm of some

80s new wave pop. Her eyes remain focused on the path ahead,

keeping pace with the music. Then as Linda passed a stand of trees to her

right, something flashed past her face.

It happened so quickly it might have been mistaken for a swinging

headphone cord or a length of her all-burn hair,

but it was a rope which tightened around her neck.
