Summary

This morning, “Marketplace Morning Report” host Kimberly Adams joins Marketplace’s Nova Safo to discuss the unknowns with which the stock will debut. SpaceX confirmed the public offering price is $135 dollars per share — that’s how it raised $75 billion, and how it'll make CEO Elon Musk a trillionaire — but the company followed an unconventional IPO process. Later in the show, Adams speaks with hospital administrators in Alabama about how they’re preparing for the effects of rural healthcare changes.

The biggest IPO ever is here. From Marketplace in New York, I'm Kimberly Adams. SpaceX makes its market

0:09.6

debut today. The company says it has raised the $75 billion it was seeking. It's a record-breaking

0:16.3

initial public offering, valuing SpaceX at $1.77 trillion.

0:26.5

CEO Elon Musk, who will retain voting control, is poised to become the world's first trillionaire.

0:27.8

The stock will debut with a number of unknowns, though, and Marketplace's Nova Saffo is here to

0:32.5

break those down for us.

0:33.5

Good morning, Nova.

0:34.7

Good morning, Kimberly.

0:36.0

Let's start with the biggest unknown. Is the stock

0:38.8

actually worth what the company says it's worth? Yeah, and SpaceX says it's worth $135 per share,

0:45.4

and it confirmed it got that price at public offering. That's how it raised $75 billion. And here's the

0:50.5

issue. The company's sidesteped the typical IPO process, or it makes the case to investors about what its valuation should be.

0:58.4

Instead, SpaceX went directly and just said, take it or leave it, $135. So considering the company is currently losing money, is it really worth more right now than, say, J.P. Morgan Chase, for example.

1:10.2

Well, we're going to find out that in

1:11.4

real time because the company's assertions didn't get tested in the IPO process.

1:16.4

There's also the unknown of how retail investors will affect the stock. Can you explain that?

1:21.2

Yeah, retail investors, meaning individuals can buy the stock before it's public. This typically

1:25.9

is limited to about 10% of shares being issued.

1:28.5

SpaceX, though, set aside a lot more, reportedly 30%.

1:31.7

Here's the thing, though, retail investors can be quick to buy and sell,

1:34.9

so we'll see that get tested in the next few days in the form of whether it's going to cause more volatility than you typically see.
