So this got a lot of traction on our site and around the college football media circles this

week. And it's because Bud Elliott at CBS Sports does a very good job with this blue chip ratio formula that he puts together.

And he's been doing this for well over a decade.

And what he does is it's a formula without getting too into the weeds on it.

It's basically a formula that uses recruiting rankings to figure out what teams in college football, based on how many

four-and-five-star guys you have, can legitimately compete for a national championship.

That's really what it is.

Teams capable of winning a national championship have a roster makeup that has more four and five star recruits, blue chippers, than two and three star guys.

Now, this doesn't mean that coaching and culture and development are not important, but when it comes to wing a national championship, not winning a conference title, not getting to a playoff,

not getting to a championship game, but winning a natty, you've got to have that roster depth

and you oftentimes just have to have more elite talent. That's how it goes. So since Bud

Elliott's been doing this at CBS in 2013, everybody who has won a national

championship has had a blue chip ratio over 50%.

And this year, as you look at his 2024 ratings that just came out, there are 16 teams that have a blue chip ratio above 50%, which is the threshold needed to be considered contenders for a national championship in his eyes because everybody has had at least a 50% mark who's won a Natty

going back 10 years. And all the teams listed, none of them are in the Big 12th.
