Summary

Romans 8:28-30 — The doctrine of the perseverance of the saints is a contested doctrine. Those who hold to the cherished doctrine of assurance must acknowledge the difficult objections posed and not ignore them. Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones recognizes this and serves as a positive example of an exegete who does not shy away from engaging the most often-cited Scriptures that seem to contradict his personal beliefs. In a manner that not only demonstrates a responsible handling of Scripture, he also demonstrates humility in his exegetical task. In this message on Romans 8:28–30 titled “The Biblical Way,” Dr. Lloyd-Jones outlines his principles of interpretation. He encourages interpreters of the Bible to operate on the principle of Scripture alone. Rather than allowing philosophy to govern one’s interpretation, he argues that the Christian should allow Scripture to interpret Scripture. Furthermore, one should start with the unambiguous “proof texts” and then deal with the difficult texts in light of the clear statements. He applies these interpretive principles as he works through famous passages like the Parable of the Sower, Hebrews 6, and 2 Peter 2. Listen as Dr. Lloyd-Jones lays out interpretive principles that all Christians should implement in their personal study of sacred Scripture.

Most of you, I'm sure, will recall and remember that we are still dealing with this great statement,

0:07.8

which is made by the Apostle Paul in the Epistle to the Romans in Chapter 8, verses 28, 29, and 30,

0:16.7

which I read again. And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God,

0:23.8

to them who are the called according to his purpose. For whom he did foreknow, he also did

0:30.1

predestinate to be conformed to the image of his son, that he might be the first born among many brethren.

0:39.1

Moreover, whom he did predestinate, then he also called, and whom he called, then he

0:45.3

also justified, and whom he justified them he also glorified.

0:51.3

I read those words again, not only that we may remember the context of these

0:56.2

great terms that we are considering, but in order to remind you once more of the object

1:02.3

of the whole statement, which is to let us know that if we are Christians, we have been predestinated to be conformed to the image of

1:14.6

his son. So often people argue about predestination without even mentioning what we are

1:21.6

predestinated for and thereby they miss the real point and purpose of this great statement.

1:29.5

We must never be guilty of that.

1:31.7

Whatever our interest in doctrine, we must remember that doctrine is only a means to an end.

1:37.1

You don't stop with doctrine.

1:39.0

You don't stop with predestination.

1:41.5

You're predestinated unto this conformity to the image of God's son to be finally glorified.

1:50.4

And what the apostle is doing here, as we've seen, is to give us the grounds on which we can be

1:57.5

certain and sure that that is our eternal destiny. Never was it more important

2:04.0

that we should be sure than at this present time. With the world as it is, so uncertain,

2:10.9

and life as it is. If we rarely know this doctrine and believe it and know it to be true,

2:17.3

well then as Christian people we shouldn't be frightened.
