Summary

Romans 8:28-30 — What does it mean that God works all things for the good of Christians? In this sermon on Romans 8:28–30 titled “Helping the Perplexed,” Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones expounds on one implication of this truth: the great doctrine of perseverance. This is the teaching that all who believe in Christ will persevere to the end. Christ will not lose one of God’s children for He is able to bring their salvation to completion. Many reject this doctrine for one reason or another. Some argue that many passages in the Bible teach that Christians who are truly saved can in fact finally fall away from salvation. Others who reject that the Bible is God’s word reject it on philosophical grounds. Dr. Lloyd-Jones says that while some passages do seem to teach that Christians can lose their salvation, he argues that this is wrong as the Bible does not contradict itself. He examines many of these passages that supposedly teach that the doctrine of perseverance is false and shows that this is a misreading of these texts. Listen closely to Dr. Lloyd-Jones on how to handle this challenge to eternal security in Christ. He concludes by saying that God’s Word teaches that God is able to save all those whom He has elected to save. There is no doubt that this is a great mystery, but it is one that God has revealed in His Word.

I'm going to read once more the words found in Paul's epistle to the Romans in chapter 8, reading

verses 28, 29 and 30.

And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose. For whom he did

0:24.9

for know, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his son, that he might be the

firstborn among many brethren. Moreover, whom he did predestinate, then he also called, and whom he called them he also

0:41.7

justified, and whom he justified them he also glorified.

Now we've spent some time on these verses, and especially on these terms, these great terms, these particular

0:58.0

terms which the apostle uses in the statement. You notice that I'm describing the three verses

1:05.8

as a statement because it is essentially just one great statement with a number of subsidiary clauses

1:16.5

of course but it's vital to an understanding of it and even of the individual terms as we've

1:23.2

seen that we should realize that it is one big statement.

1:28.3

Very well. Let me remind you then of what exactly the Apostle is saying here,

1:32.3

what his argument is.

1:35.3

He says that we can be certain.

1:39.3

We can know that all things work together for good, for us, because we are the called according to his purpose.

1:53.0

Now that's the thing that he's concerned about. He wrote these words in order to comfort people.

1:59.0

He is dealing, as you remember, with this whole problem of

2:02.6

suffering in the Christian life. He began it halfway through verse 17. If so be that we suffer with

2:09.5

him, we shall be also glorified together. And then immediately adds, for I reckon that the

2:16.1

sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared

2:20.3

with the glory which shall be revealed in us. And it's the same theme still. He's gone on with it.

2:27.3

But here now he's putting it in this particular form. He says, you can be certain of this as a Christian, that it doesn't matter
