Summary

Romans 8:28-30 — The great doctrines of election, predestination, calling, and the final perseverance of the saints are offered in Scripture as comfort for the believer in times of trials and suffering. The apostle Paul is primarily interested in believers seeing how they are in God’s purpose of salvation. The Christian can fall from the pastoral function of these truths when they discuss the doctrines in an argumentative or philosophical manner. In this sermon on Romans 8:26–30 titled “The Believer’s Security,” Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones pauses from expounding the content of the doctrine of the wondrous, mysterious mind of God in salvation and instead is concerned with the Christian’s posture. It is not enough to be “right” on these doctrines. The attitude towards God and others in pondering these Calvinistic truths matters a great deal. If this topic produces anything except humility and reverence, warns Dr. Lloyd-Jones, then these doctrines have not been understood as they ought. As one approaches the foot of this holy mountain – predestination, election, calling, and final assurance – the outcome should be holiness. If one’s interest in these doctrines is purely philosophical, they will not be turned toward holiness, but rather antinomianism will surely follow. Beware how one approaches these great doctrines of grace as posture changes everything.

I would like to call attention once more to the words found in the eighth chapter of Paul's epistle to the Romans, reading verses 28, 29 and 30.

And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according

For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his

Moreover, whom he did predestinate, then he also called,

and whom he called them he also justified,

and whom he justified them he also glorified.

Now, we spent most of last Friday evening, you remember, in preparing ourselves for a consideration of this great argument that the Apostle works out in these three verses.

1:06.0

We showed the necessity for such a preparation. We must be prepared not only in mind but also in spirit,

1:14.6

and particularly we saw in spirit. And we considered the nature of this great truth which we have here in that general way.

1:26.6

Now we are looking together at what is known as the doctrine

1:30.3

of the final perseverance of the saints. And I have ventured to say that this is the ultimate

1:39.3

form of assurance. Even above anything that we may know subjectively, and we've seen reason

1:48.5

for emphasizing that in as strong a manner as we can in dealing with verses 14, 15, and 16.

But this is the ultimate basis and ground of all assurance.

2:03.6

And having therefore prepared ourselves, and let me appeal to you to remind yourselves

2:08.6

of that preparation, you come with humility, we come as realizing our own smallness and insignificance. We come not to prove that we are right

2:21.3

about anything. We come to consider the teaching of the word of God, and particularly we come to look

2:28.7

into the mind of God himself as he has been pleased to reveal it.

The ground on which we are standing is therefore holy ground,

and we must conduct and comport ourselves in the suitable and appropriate manner.
