Summary
In a society that glamorizes the idea of "doing it all," it's easy to get sucked in to the idea that if we aren't doing it all, we're somehow failing. But according to Kendra, AKA "The Lazy Genius," we absolutely do not need to and should not even attempt to do it all. In this episode, self proclaimed "hot mess mom" Danielle asks Kendra about everything from the secret to making a good "to do list," to how we can possibly stop feeling like laundry is taking over our lives, to how we know what's an essential task not to be ignored, and which things we need to put on the back burner. Want to be more productive by doing less? Then you don't want to miss this conversation.

| 0:00.0 | Let's get started! |
| 0:30.0 | Welcome to Maritime Martinez, it's Danielle and I gave Adam the day off. He isn't out here. No, he's so tired. |
| 0:40.0 | As you know we're in the thick of moving and it sucks. So I told him to take some time and rest and here we are like going through it all again. |
| 0:55.0 | And when I get into a situation like this where I feel super overwhelmed and not only are we moving, me is supposed to be packing for college. |
| 1:06.0 | I have kids in three different directions at three different camps this week, forms and you know all starting new schools and all the things. |
| 1:16.0 | I tend to just get paralyzed right? I do that thing where I sit on the couch and I'm sort of like I don't know where to start. |
| 1:23.0 | So I'm just not going to. I'm just going to do something pleasurable like binge watch Sex in the City or something, right? For the 15th time. |
| 1:34.0 | So this episode for me could not be more timely. Number one, because I need all of the freaking help I can get when it comes to organizing and not just organizing but figuring out what to get off of the organization. |
| 1:52.0 | What is on there that makes no sense and then I'm never going to get to and that is where Kendra the lazy genius is so fabulous because she is not one of these organizers or perfectionists who is like, look, if you time it all right and if you get up at 4 a.m. and make the most of your day, you'll get it all done. |
| 2:21.0 | That is not what she's about at all. She is about figuring out the shit that you're not supposed to do right that just doesn't matter and then the stuff that really you can focus on and you should focus on and that's what she's going to help us to do. |
| 2:37.0 | What is the stuff we need to say no to and I recently heard you know my woman Jane Fonda say on a podcast no is a complete sentence right and so that's kind of the philosophy that I'm trying to develop at this point saying no but not only to everybody else but to myself I don't need to do it all. |
| 3:00.0 | I mean no one's going to accuse me of doing it all that's for sure but you know the stuff that even I'm not comfortable doing right how do I get it off my to do list who do I delegate to all of those questions or what Kendra talks about this episode she is fantastic. |
| 3:18.0 | I don't know if you listen to her podcast the lazy genius but they're 20 minute episodes of pure genius about everything from to do lists to you know how to find time to have coffee with a friend to all of the things the little things in life that we just pile on ourselves and so we can't get through it all and sift through and figure out how to get it you know anything. |
| 3:48.0 | That's important over the years Kendra learned that if her worth is based on how well she does everything she should then she's a terrible human being so you know what she did she quit trying so hard and she started being a genius about the things that matter and lazy about the things that don't it's the way to live and she wants us to join her and in this conversation she gives away so many secrets so please enjoy Kendra the lazy genius. |
| 4:16.0 | Hey Kendra hi Danielle thanks for having me thanks for being here it's so nice to meet you. |
| 4:23.0 | I so I've listened to many of your podcast episodes they're perfect because first of all they're not they're like I feel like what what you do is very doable especially for someone like me I was just telling you that I I would consider myself in fact I think about five or six years ago. |
| 4:45.0 | I did a post and an old blog that I had that the title was I really am a hot mess mom and it went viral I was you know everywhere was calling me the today show that this that you know like that you know for some reason admitting you were a hot mess mom I guess was like new right you know the internet was still very filtered and there wasn't as much transparency as there is now. |
| 5:11.0 | So so my world is very different in the sense that I think that my authentic self is very much my my place of comfort is sort of accepting the chaos a little bit which I know is a little bit of what you're about but I was just wondering if you could tell everyone what the lazy genius means how it came to be. |
| 5:37.0 | Yeah I love that you use that phrase you have chosen that it's you're okay with the comfort in the chaos and that would in in lazy genius language we would translate that to well that's kind of what matters is that you are accepting. |
| 5:53.0 | Of whatever it is that is in front of you and that doesn't when I think when we talk about accepting things it's like we see it is like settling that somehow. |
| 6:02.0 | You know chaos is bad chaos is not bad if you're comfortable in chaos that's great some people aren't it's a it's a they're diametrically opposed things that don't need to be we can get into that but a lazy genius is someone who is a genius about the things that matter and lazy about the things that don't. |
| 6:20.0 | And the trick here is you get to decide what matters to you. |
