Today's story starts on May 20th, 2005, when the nude body of 28-year-old Loretta Chason

Lewis was found floating in a canal just outside of Jennings, Louisiana.

Upon being fished out of the water and brought into the medical examiner, it was determined that, while Loretta did have significant amounts of cocaine and alcohol in her system, her cause of death would remain a mystery.

Loretta was a known sex worker and known drug addict.

Because of this, her death was merely chalked up to a drug deal gone wrong that, given the state of her body and lack of evidence, seemed unlikely to be solved.

This theory, however, changed slightly when, on June 18, 2005, the body of 30-year-old Ernestine Marie Daniels Patterson showed up in the canal just five miles south from where Loretta Lewis was

found. Ernestine, like Loretta, had drugs in her system, but unlike Loretta, her cause of death

seemed to be much clearer. She had a slash going across her throat and wounds to her wrist that

suggested she struggled immensely with whoever took her life.
