In response to the Al-Qaeda inspired assault on the American mainland, the U.S. launched a war against the Taliban regime in Afghanistan,

which had been playing host to the Al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden.

While the Taliban were overthrown in relatively short order, clearly bin Laden himself was regarded as a key target.

And by December 2001, the focus had shifted to the mountains in eastern Afghanistan,

where anti-Taliban forces supported by intensive US
