Summary

This week, Scott sat down with his Lawfare colleagues Benjamin Wittes, Daniel Byman, and Ari Tabatabai for an in-depth discussion of the U.S. military operations against Iran, including:

  • “Isn’t it Iran-ic.” Trump’s decision to join Israel in removing Ayatollah Khamanei reflects a deep reversal by the president, who has spent years criticizing his predecessors’ own experiences with regime change and other overseas adventurism. What drove Trump to proceed this time, after stopping short twice in the past year? What can we learn from the way the Trump administration has proceeded? And how far will Trump let things go?
  • “Bibi’s Big Adventure.” Regime change in Iran is something Israel and the Arab Gulf states have advocated for frequently in the past. But they had all adopted a more cautious and even conciliatory posture toward Iran in the months before the current offensive, at least in public. How has the region approached this conflict? And what will it do moving forward?
  • “MIGA.” The death of Ayatollah Khamenei is a major shift in Iran, but we don’t know where it is going to lead. One concern that people have always had about regime change in Iran is that it will be highly destabilizing, resulting in a failed state in a crucial corner of the Middle East. On the other end, other people have asserted that removing the Ayatollah and his regime will give Iran the opportunity to flourish back into a democracy, or at least something closer to a state that’s more stable and free than Iran has been for the last several decades. Between the two is a mass spectrum of possibilities. What does the future hold for Iran in the post-Ayatollah era, if that’s the era that we’re heading into?

In object lessons, Ben is vibe-coding his way through Lawfare’s litigation tracker, as well as vibing his way through The Rest is History’s four-part series, Revolution in Iran. Dan is war-gaming his way through the attack on Iran with Next War: Iran. Scott is consuming as much Iran content as he can get his hands on with (another) Scott Anderson’s “King of Kings,” Roy Mottahedeh’s “The Mantle of the Prophet,” Gary Sick’s “All Fall Down,” and Dutch documentary “The Birthday,” finally discovered online by Lawfare’s own Anna Hickey. And Ari, not to be outdone in Iran content, recommends the graphic novel “Persepolis,” but really is escaping it all with Final Fantasy VII Remake.

So, Ben, I think like five years, perhaps to the day after you were savagely and unfairly

0:06.9

ridiculed by Roomerator during the pandemic for being in front of a hostage video, I feel like

0:11.8

you've truly mastered the live stream podcast backdrop. It is a veritable TGI Friday's of

0:17.6

Lawfare and Ben Wittes-related kitsch on the walls behind you that keeps multiplying

0:22.5

every time we do one of these. It's kind of phenomenal. But what is this black and white picture

0:27.4

I now see over your shoulder? Yeah, so that is Guy Fox being seized at the British Parliament,

0:33.2

which he was the only honest man who ever entered. And we've got some cactuses, and we've got the Bob Mueller puppet.

0:41.4

And some of my audience sent me a barrister's wig once for reasons that is very hard to understand.

0:49.0

So we've got the barrister's wig.

0:51.3

Did it come with the wig stand?

0:52.6

It did come with the wig stand, yeah. Oh, I love that. And then... Did it come with the wig stand? Or is that a... It did come with the wig stand. Yeah. I love that.

0:56.0

And then we got the sunflower that dances and plays the saxophone for reasons nobody understands.

1:03.0

And then, you know, any time I want to, I can turn this into a very serious lawfare background.

1:10.0

This I use mostly, you know, for

1:12.6

dog shirt TV, but, you know, if I want to, I can just pull up the screen and it's a very

1:18.7

serious looking lawfare background. I thought your Guy Fawkes puppet was actually Stadler or Waldorf.

1:24.4

So I think you're at a different intellectual level than I am.

1:35.1

Yeah, well, you know, the Bob Mueller puppet, I had custom made, and, you know, I'm very fond of the Bob Mueller puppet.

1:36.6

Where does one get custom puppets?

1:39.4

You know, if you type in custom-made puppets, a variety of options will show up for you. This one was made

1:47.5

in Indiana, I believe. We still have a Bob Mueller votive candle somewhere in our attic,

1:52.7

so he certainly has his own cult.
