Summary

Is it final because it's the last one? SHOT Show was a great place to hear lots of discussion on the most recent egregious ATF rule, one that claims that 10-40m Americans are felons and have been for some time. This podcast has some of the main points, and here are some great resources to learn more.

CORRECTION: Early on in the podcast I mentioned the US government selling surplus M1 Garands with a 16.25" barrel, but those were in fact M1 Carbines. The surplus M1 Garands had an 18" barrel, and should also not be confused with M1 Abrams, which usually has at least a 200" barrel.

Hello and welcome to another T-Rex talk.

0:03.6

This is, I know that we missed an episode as we were preparing for Shot Show, but we just got back from Shot Show and now I'm recording an episode about the ATF, rather unsurprisingly, and their new pistol ban rule.

0:16.4

They have a final rule that they have published describing that all pistol-braced weapons are, in fact,

0:24.9

SBRs. There's actually a little bit of a wiggle room in theory, but that's only because the

0:31.1

bill is so incredibly poorly written when it comes to the description of what a pistol-braced

0:36.6

pistol would actually be compared to an SBR.

0:40.0

I think it's safe to assume that everything is just going to be classified as an SBR.

0:43.6

Now, there hasn't been quite as much time to study this particular bill because they rolled it out

0:49.4

two or three days right before Shotshow. A huge percentage of the people who would normally look into these things

0:55.6

and carefully dissect them and digest them and figure out what policies should be were in the

0:59.8

middle of repairing to take their companies to Shachow. The compliance officers at a bunch of

1:05.0

companies who would normally go over this stuff with a fine-toothed comb were probably in

1:09.9

the middle of arguing with teamsters about how

1:13.3

their stuff should be transported around the Venetian Convention Hall floor at that very moment.

1:18.4

So there's been a lot of chatter about this, but there hasn't been a lot of focused conversation.

1:24.1

I'm glad that I waited to talk about this until I'd had an opportunity to talk to a

1:28.5

bunch of people at Shot Show because I think that the ATF very purposefully and somewhat maliciously

1:34.1

decided to release the language of this new final rule right before Shot Show just to like throw a wrench

1:40.8

into the gun industry as a whole. because everybody was so busy, because everybody

1:45.4

was so preoccupied, because they knew that everybody would be talking about this instead of their

1:49.6

regular actual business at shot show. It's kind of a jerk move. But I think that it had actually

1:55.7

backfired on them and had as significant silver lining, which I will talk about later. But one of them
