How are you coping with following that EU negotiation?

I say negotiation, but of course it's negotiations plural.

Not just the cabinet negotiating with each other.

Not just the levers in the cabinet, particularly Boris Johnson,

negotiating in effect with Jacob Rees Morgh to see what those on the back benches will find tolerable.

Not just Theresa May negotiating to see what she can get a parliamentary majority for.

Not just Jeremy Corbyn negotiating with the remainers in his shadow cabinet on his back benches,

but also negotiating with the electorate.

And that is before you get involved with the negotiations with the EU27.

That is the reason.

All this is so complicated.

All this is so uncertain.

All this is so unpredictable.

As I found on a visit to Paris this week for the today programme,

where I was met by a mixture of denial and disbelief,

including this memorable exchange with the representative of French car manufacturers.

It reminds me of the movie Apocalypse Now,

when Martin Shin is working in a trans-shar and asks a soldier,

a soldier, do you know who's in command here and the guy, and so are the hands you?

More than anything else I've heard in recent weeks.

That question, who's in charge, ain't you?
