It is many weeks since Boris Johnson became Prime Minister and it still appears to be in

his honeymoon facing almost no opposition from Labour or indeed from his own backbenches.

And yet maybe that trouble began this week. To govern it is to choose someone once said

and Boris Johnson has done very little choosing up to now. But this week he chose to offend

the United States to offend Donald Trump and many of his biggest Brexit supporters who

think he should never have allowed a Chinese company to play a crucial role in our national

infrastructure.

We can probably keep them out of the MOD. We can probably keep the amount of GCHQ with

no guarantee, but we can probably keep them out. Bear in mind, Huawei has tens of thousands.

I think as many as 80,000 researchers, they got more researchers and we got soldiers,

let alone GCHQ analysts.

The other big decision not announced, although it looks increasingly like it's been taken,

is whether to go ahead with a £100 billion project of building HS2, the high speed rail

link between London and Birmingham and eventually Manchester and Leeds as well.

Along with many colleagues in the House of Commons from all over the country, many of whom

actually are not anywhere near the root of HS2, we continue to make the case that HS2

is the wrong project and that actually what we need is to spend the money on local commuter

routes, particularly connecting the east and west of the north of England, connecting

the Midlands to the north.

On HS2, just like on Huawei, Boris Johnson has already made some new enemies, some who

will be disappointed by the way things have turned out.
