Summary

Salem was far from the only "witchcraft outbreak" in American history. Witches – falsely accused and the real thing – can be found throughout the early history of America, from healers to herbalists, hex signs, and hoodoo doctors. And in some cases of accused witches, murder and death followed in the wake of public outcry. Here's what happened.

0:00.0	Most of the people who settled the early American colonies are shrouded in mystery, more than
0:25.5	three centuries later. Records are scarce, and while we do know a good deal about the famous people
0:31.1	of the era, we possess little that illuminates the lives of the ordinary folk. What little we do know
0:37.7	comes from the stories, letters, and diaries that survive. We know they came to America in saline
0:43.5	ships, crammed with people, animals, and whatever belongings they could bring with them. Sickness,
0:48.8	including the near constant nausea for being tossed by the waves, plague them. Many died on the way,
0:55.6	never reaching the new world at all. They brought a piece of the old world with them, with their
1:01.2	histories and their traditions. They brought their hopes, dreams, fears, horrors, and faith in the new
1:07.9	God. Some escaped persecution for their religious beliefs, and some of them were the persecutors.
1:14.4	They left Europe at a time when thousands were being accused, tortured, hanged, and burned for
1:20.1	being witches. And they came to America for a fresh start. The new arrivals on these shores
1:26.6	knew about witchcraft. They feared it, and maybe experienced it, or even practiced it, first hand.
1:34.3	They brought their beliefs in the supernatural with them to their new home across the sea.
1:39.5	Some came to escape the devil, only to find him waiting in the woods, forests, and fields of America.
1:47.6	As one old New Englander said, reflecting late in his life about his decision to come to America
1:54.0	50 years before, he come to the new world to free himself from the evil forces of his former home,
2:00.4	but to his dismay he stated, I found here a devil attempt and a corrupt heart to deceive.
