Throughout 1976 and early 1977, Hitchcock retreated to his home to be with Alma, who had

by now become the victim of several more minor strokes that had left her exhausted and weak.

The alarming and rapid deterioration of his companion caused Hitchcock to throw

his remaining energies into a project that he hoped would lift them both from their state of decay.

Calling in the services of writer David Freeman, he laid out plans for another movie to be entitled The Short Night,

an espionage thriller based on the real-life exploits of double agent George Blake.

Their work days began in the late morning when Freeman would arrive at Hitchcock's offices

and patiently await the director,

who would make his way with great difficulty and with the use of a cane to his chair, where

several hours of story planning would take place.

He wanted to talk generally about espionage and prison escapes, said Freeman, and his talk

was wide-ranging,

gossipy and reflective, and spiced with anecdotes about his past films and his past life.
